Relationship with God is ultimately what we all seek, consciously or subconsciously, our hearts long for Him. Even though we’ve been given the means through Jesus, the world is a powerful force that all too easily distracts and keeps us from Him. As today’s saint demonstrates, the fight for a pure heart is worth the struggle as the consequence for surrender to God is simply joy. St. Philip Neri, often known as the saint of joy, shows us not only the effect that God has on our souls when we intentionally seek relationship with Him, but also the evangelizing power that our joy has. As our friend says, “A joyful heart is more easily made perfect than a downcast one.”
